Hiatal-Hernia-and-GERD

Hiatal Hernia / GERD

GERD ( Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease ) is one of the most common causes for visits to one’s primary physician, or a gastroenterologist.  GERD and Hiatal Hernia often co-exist. Management is primarily medical. However, not all GERD patients respond uniformly to medications, and medications have to be taken lifelong.  Cost of lifelong medications, possible medicine and disease related complications and the risk of developing esophageal cancer, are other top concerns. Certain types of Hiatal Hernia respond poorly to medications and, if symptomatic, respond best to surgical correction.

Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication surgery for GERD and Hiatal Hernia repair are well established and effective surgical treatment alternatives for selective patients.  Dr. Kalan is a recognized expert, who been offering this surgical treatment to his patients since 1999, with very good short and medium term results, and a negligibly low complication rate. Hospital stay is typically overnight.

Nowadays, in well screened patients, robot assisted laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair and fundoplication is an added and available surgical option, for those patients and their physicians, who may be interested in it.
