Hernias are the most common reason for elective surgery. Many surgeons are capable hernia surgeons. Dr. Kalan is an acknowledged educator, both nationally and internationally, in the open and laparoscopic repair of all common and uncommon hernias, such as inguinal hernia, ventral hernia, incisional hernia, umbilical hernia, epigastric hernia, para-colostomy hernia, Spigelian hernia, femoral hernia, lumbar hernia, to name some. He is, and has often been an invited speaker, proctor and visiting surgeon, in the fields of hernia surgery, gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery, both nationally and internationally. In the past, he has served on an elite panel of expert surgeons, as an advisor and consultant, in the development of certain new generation composite, light weight meshes that are being widely used for hernia repairs.

Morbidly obese patients ( before, or after weight reduction procedures ) with hernias, pose a significant and unique challenge to surgeons attempting repair of such hernias. Recurrence rates are high in this group of patients, irrespective of the technique of repair.  Dr. Kalan meets this challenge with his Plastic Surgery colleagues. They offer such patients, especially if the hernia is symptomatic, the option of simultaneous one - stage repair of their hernia and abdominoplasty, excess soft tissue removal and soft tissue re-alignment. A study, detailing their technique and its outcomes, was published in the Annals of Plastic Surgery; March 2009; Vol 62, Number 3; 284-289.  Patients who are completely  asymptomatic, will also be offered the option of being evaluated for a weight reduction surgical procedure, with simultaneous, or staged hernia repair and abdominoplasty.
