Dr. Mohammed Kalan
M.D., F.A.C.S., F.R.C.S. 

Dr. Mohammed Kalan is an American Board of Surgery certified surgeon who has been practicing in the Washington, D.C. area for 18 years, and has been recognized as one of the area’s top surgeons since 2000. Dr. Kalan is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in gastrointestinal surgery, colorectal, and surgical oncology. Dr. Kalan serves as a Clinical Professor of Surgery at The George Washington University Hospital and Georgetown University Medical Center. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S) and the Royal College of Surgeons (F.R.C.S) in the U.K. His areas of expertise include colorectal surgery, laparoscopic surgery, hernia repairs, surgical oncology, and a number of other general surgical procedures in both the outpatient and hospital setting. Dr. Kalan brings vast academic experience and training with a personal and dedicated approach to the care of all of his patients. 

Dr. Kalan completed his undergraduate education in India, and received his medical degree from BJ Medical College in Pune, India in 1983. He completed his first surgical residency training at King Edward Memorial Hospital in Pune, India in 1986. After completion of his training in India, Dr. Kalan completed his second surgical residency in England, U.K. from 1988 to 1994, where he was also specially trained in Colorectal Surgery and Surgical Oncology. He then moved to the United States, where he completed his third surgical residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia in 1998. He then completed his fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the George Washington University Hospital in 1999. Dr. Kalan brings academic knowledge, unique skills and extensive experience to his profession from accredited university surgical training programs in three countries on three continents.

Dr. Kalan has presented over 50 Invited Lectures internationally, on subjects related to gastro-intestinal surgery, colorectal surgery, cancer surgery, hernia surgery, sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery. He has been an Invited Speaker, Visiting Professor and Surgical Educator, at surgical meetings, hospitals and medical institutions in Europe, Australasia, Asia and the Middle East.

NATIONAL / REGIONAL PRESENTATIONS & INVITED LECTURES
Dr. Kalan has presented over 70 lectures, including several Grand Rounds presentations, locally, regionally and nationally. His lectures deal with his areas of expertise, including all Gastro-intestinal Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery and Hernia Surgery. 

Dr. Kalan has also served on several hospital, local and national Committees, is a peer referee and reviewer for surgical journals, has contributed textbook chapters, and teaches, trains and closely works with surgical residents and medical students at the area's two major university hospitals.  He has contributed multiple publications to peer reviewed journals.
